5 Ways to Celebrate School Library Month

Here is our teacher's guide to celebrating the 30th annual School Library Month.

Every April, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) celebrates the essential role that school libraries play in transformative learning. This year marks the 30th anniversary of School Library Month and features the theme "Your School Library Where Learning Never Ends." To help you celebrate the month, we've rounded up five fantastic ways to celebrate school libraries and librarians all across the nation:

1. Visit the Official Site

AASL has a dedicated page for School Library Month. There, you can learn more about the program's history, engage with the association and download official School Library Month posters and bookmarks.

2. Write Thank-You Letters To Your School Librarian

Who doesn't enjoy getting a thank-you note? Have your class write thank-you cards to your school librarian(s). It's a simple gesture, but can really go a long way!

3. Join an Event

The American Library Association (ALA) has a full list of promotional events celebrating school libraries. See their 2015-2016 events and join in on one of the national celebrations!

4. Nominate Your Librarian

Ilovelibraries, an initiative of the ALA, is designed to keep the nation informed about today's libraries. The initiative promotes the value of libraries and librarians, and points out the key issues affecting them. Every year, they award 10 librarians with a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and a travel stipend to attend the awards ceremony in New York City (hosted by The New York Times)! Sign up to be notified when they start accepting entries and nominate your school librarian!!

5. Win Books for Your School Library

BookPal is sponsoring one lucky school library with a class set of 25 new books! Nominate your school and spread the word. The school with the most nominations will win.
