4. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park

A Long Walk to Water

This beautifully crafted novel features two compelling stories: one centered around a Sudanese girl in 2008 as she journeys to get water every day and the other telling us of a “lost boy’s” journey through Africa in 1985. Both stories create an amazing glimpse into the political and social history of an entire continent.

5. Johnny Tremain by Esther Hoskins Forbes

Johnny Tremain

When 14-year-old Johnny Tremain injures his hand and has to give up his promising future as a silversmith, all seems lost. But he finds himself in the midst of something far more exciting as a messenger for the Sons of Liberty during the American Revolutionary War. Since winning the Newbery Medal in 1944, Johnny Tremain has remained a standard curriculum title.

6. The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

the outsiders

A young adult classic for more than 50 years, The Outsiders tells the dynamic story of young Ponyboy as he protects his family and friends while coming to terms with the divide between his life and that of the Socs — a malicious gang of rich teenagers.
