8 Thanksgiving Books for Children

Thanksgiving is all about gathering, celebrating and spending quality time with family. Reading with your younger family members is one of the best ways to bond with them. When you read aloud with kids, you not only help them develop language and literacy skills but you show them how fun books can be! To encourage family reading time this Turkey Day, BookPal has put together a Pinterest board filled with children's books on Thanksgiving.

Here are eight of our favorite books from the Thanksgiving reading list:

Five Silly Turkeys by Salina Yoon

Toddlers will love the silly Thanksgiving turkeys of this fun themed counting book. From twirling on a dance floor to tanning in the sun, these five turkeys are no ordinary Thanksgiving birds!

Happy Thanksgiving, Curious George by H.A. Rey

Curious George is so excited about Thanksgiving! He loves everything about the holiday, from the parade with jugglers, music and big balloons to the delicious turkey shared with friends and family. But even on Thanksgiving, his curiosity manages to stir up some trouble...

Pete the Cat: The First Thanksgiving by James Dean

Starring in the school's Thanksgiving play would make even in the coolest cat nervous, but when Pete the Cat gets on the stage, he makes learning about the first Thanksgiving tons of fun!

Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper

Deep in the woods in an old white cabin, three friends make their amazing pumpkin soup the same exact way every day. The Cat slices up the pumpkin, the Duck tips in just enough salt and the Squirrel stirs in the water... but one day, the Duck wants to stir instead, causing a horrible squabble. Duck storms out the cabin in a huff, and it isn't long before Cat and Squirrel start worrying about him!

Molly's Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen

It's Molly's first Thanksgiving in the New World and she can't find much to be thankful for. She's embarrassed when her mother helps with a Thanksgiving project by making a little doll that looks more like a Russian refugee than a New England Pilgrim... but that tiny, modern-day Pilgrim just might help Molly find a place for herself in America.

Thanksgiving on Thursday by Mary Pope Osborne

When the Magic Tree House whisks Annie and Jack back to 1621 on the very first Thanksgiving Day, they are asked by the Pilgrims to help get things ready. Whether it's cooking or clamming, however, the pair don't know how to do anything the Pilgrim way! Will they ruin the holiday forever, or will the feast go on?

Junie B., First Grader: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff) by Barbara Park

It's Thanksgiving Time! Room One is getting ready for its very own holiday feast. There's even a contest to see which room can write the best thankful list! The winners will get a pumpkin pie. But it turns out being thankful is harder than it seems...

If You Sailed On The Mayflower In 1620 by Ann McGovern

The popular "If You" series is back, answering a variety of questions about Pilgrim life (both on the ship and on the shore) and helping your young readers understand just what it was like to have lived at that time.

May your tummies be filled with turkey and your minds filled with books. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!
