Our Favorite Spells in Honor of Harry Potter Month

In honor of Harry Potter's birthday on July 31, The Scholastic Store officially named July Harry Potter Month. So far this July, J.K. Rowling released a brand new short story on Pottermore and Diagon Alley opened at Universal Orlando's Wizarding World of Harry Potter. In celebration of Harry Potter Month, we've put together a list of our favorite spells of all time. Fair warning, though, there are a few spoilers!

9) Wingardium Leviosa (levitation charm)

This famous spell was introduced in the very first book of the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, when Charms Professor Filius Flitwick had his class practice levitating feathers. It can be argued that this is the spell that began Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger's friendship.

8) Rictusempra (tickling charm)

It might sound funny, but it definitely helped Harry in his duel with Draco Malfoy in the second book of the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This spell brings laughter into the world (given that your target is ticklish), and that's always a good thing!

7) Expelliarmus (disarming charm)

Best known as Harry's signature spell throughout the series, this charm disarms the conjuror's opponent, usually by flinging the victim's wand out of reach. Though it's a simple spell, Harry used it to defeat Voldemort, his greatest opponent of all time.

6) Riddikulus

The most effective spell against a Boggart (a shape-shifter that take on the form of its victim's worst fear) depends entirely on what the conjurer is concentrating on. When it's used correctly, it produces a humorous result. This famous spell from Harry Potter also proves that you can take on your worst fears if you concentrate hard enough.

5) Locomotor Wibbly (jelly-legs jinx/curse)

This silly spell is actually very useful! Though this spell was mentioned in the first book of the series, it wasn't used until Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by Hermione against Harry, who was practicing his shield charm for the third task of the Triwizard Tournament. During an interview with Scholastic, Rowling commented, "Who wouldn't want to be able to use the Jelly-Legs Curse?"

4) Lumos (wand-lighting charm)

Imagine having a flashlight that does not require batteries, sunlight or any cranking whatsoever -- that's pretty much what a wand turns into using the Lumos charm! Not only is it one of the most environmentally friendly spell around, it is quite useful since other spells can be cast by the same wand at the same time.

3) Reparo

With this spell, you can fix almost anything -- in fact, Harry used it to repair his wand! It's been used many times in the book, so it's safe to say that it is effective. Just imagine all situations when this spell would come in handy!

2) Accio (summoning charm)

If you're the type of person who misplaces things often, this charm would be your favorite Harry Potter spell. The opposite of the banishing charm, Accio summons an object to the caster and can potentially be used over long distances.

1) Expecto Patronum

This is THE spell that protects and shields conjurors from Dementors (soul-sucking creatures that deprive human minds of all happiness) and Lethifolds (carnivorous and highly dangerous magical creatures). It also serves as a reminder that depression and sadness can be overcome with happiness and hope.
