Real Life Book Places in Indianapolis

9780525478812There are countless places in fiction that we can only wish were real, but let's not forget about the ones that actually are! Today, we're launching our Real Life Book Places Series, dedicated to taking you all over the United States -- and even overseas! -- to visit real life places that are mentioned in bestselling books. Every couple of weeks, we'll be zoning in on one location and discussing the book (or books) that are set there.

New York Times bestselling author John Green is most well known for The Fault in Our Stars, a touching story of two star-crossed, cancer-ridden teens that fall in love. One of the most memorable locations in the book is Funky Bones, first mentioned in chapter five.

"We walked down what passes for a hill in Indianapolis to this clearing where kids were climbing all over this huge oversize skeleton sculpture. The bones were each about waist high, and the thighbone was longer than me. It looked like a child's drawing of a skeleton rising up out of the ground."

Located in 100 Acres, The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park, of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, you can find Funky Bones sprawled out exactly how Green describes him.

Funky Bones, created by Dutch artist Joep Van Lieshout of Atelier Van Lieshout (a studio group that produces designs, architecture and large-scale public arenas that accommodate specialty lifestyles), is made primarily of plywood and fiberglass. There are a total of 20 benches emblazoned with bone depictions that together form a gigantic, cartoon skeleton that can be played upon and sat on.

Recommended for community reading, non profit and literacy programs, Green's #1 New York Times Bestseller is a great novel that will engage young adult readers and encourage them to read more novels. The Fault in Our Stars is available for purchase in bulk on BookPal, a wholesale book distributor that sells over three million books and eBooks titles.
