A Group or a Team?

The word "team" is overused today. It has lost its meaning and many people cannot distinguish between a club, a group, and a highly functioning team.

People who identify as being a part of a team are looking out for the team's best interest. They from high connections with others and are emotionally engaged. Team members are connected at a human level and are willing to go out of their way to help others. With all these characteristics in mind, the team is transformed into a mission; a mission where everyone is going all-in and is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

The 3 Lines of Leadership: An Overview

Leadership means more than just having one person order everyone around. Leadership is an engaging art that Alden believes to be centered around three lines:

•  First Line: leading yourself. You can control how you think, how you feel, and how you act. Your team will mirror you, your company culture will mirror your team's actions, and ultimately, your culture is a mirror for what your customers experience.

•  Second Line: leading the people you are directly responsible for. You must build high-performance actions between the first and second lines in order to truly develop an unstoppable team.

 •  Third Line: leading your indirects. Expand your second line into the third line. Your indirects range anywhere from suppliers that provide your product materials, vendors that help you assemble or deliver your products, and most importantly, your customers and the community you operate from.

When you build your team up, consider these four ideas to adopt:

•  Connect and develop trust through communication, credibility, and commitment.

•  Achieve by setting direction. Know each individual's aspirations, assess their work, and appreciate their efforts.

•  Respect your team and create an environment of contribution. Foster an environment where team members are not afraid to share their ideas.

•  Empower your team members and create ownership. Educate them if needed. Enable them to do more. Engage them with different projects.
