Holidays are a great way to engage kids in the classroom and teach new concepts in a fun way. Halloween is no exception. Gather your little monsters, ghosts, and goblins for a time of reading, crafts, and games. We've compiled five spooky books perfect for Halloween and paired them with fun classroom activities!

5 Halloween-Themed Activities Based off of Children's Books:

1. Make a Candy Corn Monster

Kids will love creating (and eating leftovers of) this frighteningly cute monster. Use colored paper to create the body, arms, legs, mouth, eyes, horns, and feet. Attach candy corn teeth and your monster is ready to go!

Then, read The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing

Little monsters and goofy goblins star in this spooky rendition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Will they be ready in time to meet the human trick-or-treaters?

 

2. Play the Roll a Pumpkin Game

All you will need for this simple game is a pair of dice, a piece of paper per participant, and crayons. Your pumpkin's fate is up to the luck of the roll. Who will finish their pumpkin first? This game can be played in pairs or larger groups. Have fun discovering what your kids create!

3. Play the Witch Hat Ring Toss

Make cones out of black poster board and attach them to a circle cut out of the same material to form a witch's hat. Repeat until you have your desired amount of hats and glue them onto a foam board. Decorate the board, add point values to the hats, and you are ready to go! Have the kids toss rings at the hats, trying to gain the most amount of points.

The witch and her cat are flying through the sky when the wind suddenly blows away her hat, bow, and wand. Thankfully, three animals recover the missing items in return for a ride on the broom. Will there be enough room for everyone?

 

4. Make a Hanging Bat

Recycle your empty toilet paper rolls into cute hanging bats! Paint the roll black or brown, add construction paper wings and ears, glue on eyes, draw a mouth, and attach pipe cleaner legs. Your bat is now ready to "hang out".

5. Play the Ghost Bowling Game

Your kids will love trying to knock down these ghosts. Simply draw ghost faces on six white paper cups, stack them up, and get to throwing! For extra difficulty, add more cups to the stack. Use any ball you have laying around or decorate your own to look like a pumpkin.

Then, read Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O'Connell

Ten timid ghosts in a haunted house have a problem — a witch is planning on moving in and scaring them away. Practice counting to ten as each ghost avoids the witch's tricks.
