A few weeks ago, while I was playing with my friend's two-year-old niece, I spotted the Very Hungry Caterpillar buried at the bottom of her toy box. I jumped with excitement at the chance to flip through the pages. As I started to read, all the memories came rushing back: the vivid illustrations, the holes in pages, and that silly, little, green caterpillar.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, written by famous children's author Eric Carle, was first published in 1969 by the World Publishing Company. Eric Carle came up with the concept one day while hole punching a stack of papers. Forty-four years later, the book has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and is published in 47 different languages. The story remains widely popular to this day as the caterpillar continues to captivate the minds of children everywhere.
This book is a great teaching tool for kindergarten and first grade classrooms. You can create tons of fun activities and projects revolving around teaching themes such as the days of the week, foods, and metamorphosis. In fact, entire Pinterest boards are dedicated to The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
