How One Book Is Helping to End World Hunger

1000-first-days

Bread for the World is changing how we treat hunger, poverty, and nutrition.

We often hear about starvation in struggling nations, but did you know that people suffer from hunger here in the United States? In fact, one in five children in the United States is food insecure, which means they don’t know where their next meal is going to come from.

Bread for the World is a BookPal client that is doing their part to end world hunger at home and abroad. Founded in 1974, the organization urges our nation’s decision-makers to change policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to prevail. Bread also runs an institute that provides nonpartisan policy analysis on hunger and strategies to end it. Each year the organization produces a hunger report that documents connections among hunger, food insecurity, and health issues in the United States and abroad.

Roger Thurow, agricultural development expert and author of The Last Hunger Season, published a new book in May 2016 called The First 1,000 Days: A Crucial Time for Mothers and Children—And the World. The book details the importance of proper nutrition during the 1,000-day period from the beginning of a woman’s pregnancy to her child’s second birthday.

The Bread for the World Institute played a major role in the growth of this 1,000 days movement. In fact, the organization strongly advocates for the WIC (Women, Infants, Children) program – a supplemental nutrition program for pregnant women and small children. For this reason, Jim Lund, the VP of Development and Membership at Bread, thought it would be a great idea to share The First 1,000 Days with some of the organization’s leading benefactors.

The goal, Jim says, “is to provide them with a terrific picture of what our organization’s impact has been over the years. The book really embodies the story of what we’re trying to do with our work.”

We're so happy to work with this amazing organization and we highly recommend you check out The First 1,000 Days. Thank you, James, for sharing your story!
