Add some of these healthy habits to your work day!

We all know that exercise is essential to living a healthy, happy life. In case there are any doubts, here are three facts that will definitively prove to you that wellness is important in the workplace:

1. People who sit throughout the day have a 54 percent greater risk of dying from a heart attack.

2. If you sit for more than 4 hours a day, you're much more likely to suffer from chronic ailments such as heart disease and diabetes.

3. Wellness programs have been shown to boast an average return on investment of about 3:1.

Are you convinced yet? We sure are!

Even though we're all well aware of the importance of exercise, we also know how hard it can be — especially if you work at a desk job. Some companies don't offer corporate wellness programs, so it's up to YOU to figure out how to squeeze in some exercise at work. Not to worry, we're here to help!

4 ways to squeeze in exercise at your desk job:

1. Take the stairs.

take the stairs

Instead of hopping on the elevator, sneak in some extra steps by taking the stairs! It's especially easy to do if you're descending. Taking the stairs is a healthy habit that may seem small but makes a great impact on your well-being in the long-run. If you're going to or coming from the 16th floor though or simply can't imagine climbing your way to your destination, consider getting off the elevator a little early to walk down the last few flights of stairs.

2. Visit your coworkers — in person!

visit your coworkers

It's easy to communicate with everyone in the office on your computer or over the phone. When was the last time you saw all your office mates in person? I have to admit that there are days when I only see people at the start and end of my day. Getting up from your desk to visit your coworkers is a great way to sneak in some more steps during your work day and builds camaraderie — just make sure you visit them when they're not busy.

3. Drink more water.

Take a cue from man's best friend and drink more water! Staying hydrated will get you up and moving—  between the kitchen, your desk, and the bathroom, you'll squeeze in dozens of steps while you're soaking up the many benefits of drinking more water.

4. Work out at your desk.

You don't need fancy exercise gear or a special outfit to work out. There are plenty of exercises you can do right at your desk. Some even incorporate your chair! Here's a list of some handy dandy infographics that will help you get started:
