Y fi naliza la novela con las desventuras de Zaide, con las que el autor recrea la vida del padrastro negro del Lazarillo de Tormes, a quien encontramos aquí, años después, acompañando al conquistador Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca en el delirante viaje a pie por el Nuevo Mundo que este describiera en Naufragios.
Una novela en la que Patxi Irurzun mantiene el tono de su anterior y exitosa obra, Los dueños del viento, y como es habitual en él nos presenta las vidas de aquellos que «nunca existieron; o, mejor dicho, fueron obligados a vivir como si no tuvieran derecho a hacerlo».
