Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A superb portrait of the Jewish community in Damascus at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In the tradition of the great stories that have brought us closer to the Middle East, Wherever You Go, I Will Go is a marvelous tale that draws from biblical worldview and will fascinate readers of novels such as Midaq Alley, by Naguib Mahfuz; The Sand Child, by Tahar Ben Jelloun; The Bookseller of Kabul, by Åsne Seierstad, or Comets in the Sky, by Khaled Hosseini.

Syria, 1912. Latife, a lovely eight-year-old girl, lives with her parents in the beautiful city of Damascus. Although they belong to the—still—opulent Jewish community, her family is condemned to live ostracized and in misery because her mother was never able to conceive a son. After her mother’s sudden death and being abandoned by her father, the fates will take Latife to a rich benefactor’s home, where she will find peace and, after becoming a woman, also love.

The war, consequence of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, puts an end to the freedom and quiet of all Syrians, destroying the mythical city of Damascus in its wake. Latife’s last chance to find happiness once again hinges on a great voyage to a faraway place—Mexico will become the Promise Land not only for Latife and her family, but for several inhabitants of Sham, who will have to readjust their lives to new and odd traditions, in spite of the pain and the uncertainty this entails.
