Overview

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is the saga that introduces readers to the Nolan family – an immigrant family that has to work for their new home in America. Split into five parts within the span of about twenty years, readers learn the heartwarming and often difficult story of this family looking to live a prosperous life in the early 1900s. Author Betty Smith uses provoking characters, a historical background and beautiful storytelling to bring the Nolan family to life. The first part of this book is set in 1912, though this certainly isn’t where the family’s story begins. It truly begins in 1900 with the love and new relationship of Johnny and Katie, who are both the children of immigrants. When Katie becomes pregnant with the story’s protagonist, their daughter Francie, the young relationship becomes much harder, particularly due to Johnny’s alcohol problem. They also have a son Cornelius and eventually move to the Brooklyn apartment that we are first introduced to. From there, we follow the story of Francie, as she has to learn about love, loss, work and education, all at the turn of twenty century America. The fictional story of the Nolans is certainly one for the ages, but also one that reflects many of the struggles that early Americans faced during this period. Due to its mature historical and life themes, this title is recommended for readers ages fourteen and older, or with at least a high school reading level.
