Overview

—The Guardian

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

John Cheever’s short stories are the great literary testimony of the American middle class of the nineteen fifties and sixties. Known as “the American Chekov,” he was the grand chronicler of this almost mythological territory of the residential landscape on the outskirts of big cities, with their cocktail and pool parties, their mornings of newspapers by the door, hats, briefcases, and kissing the kids goodbye, afternoons with Benny Goodman on the radio, and entire evenings yearning for a different life. Cheever was a master in turning this mirage of success and happiness into the stage of family joy and grief that, in the midst of frustration, desire, and boredom, make up an incomparable portrait of the human soul that transcends any time or nation.

This edition includes Rodrigo Fresán’s epilogue, and keeps Cheever’s own selection, worthy of a Pulitzer Prize in 1978 and the National Book Critics Circle. Spanning almost three decades, it includes emblematic tales, such as “The Narrator,” the oneiric portrait of a lost man, or “The Rural Husband,” miniature novel according to Nabokov, the protagonist of which survives a plane crash and returns home to the absolute indifference of his family.

Cheever, who struggled his entire life with alcoholism and a repressed bisexuality, proved to know perfectly how the most intimate passions wreak havoc when they burst with little noise. In the dark he knew how to find glimmers of light in the most quenched existence, weak luminous streaks that in his hand brightened a life.
