Overview

«Montaigne.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

“Montaigne. Read this from cover to cover, and when you are done, read it again. It is a wonder.” —Gustave Flaubert

“I do not teach nor indoctrinate. All I ever do is relate.”

In 1571, after a horse-riding accident, Michel de Montaigne left his position as magistrate in Bordeaux and retired to his castle, where he began writing. This is the, almost literary, beginning of one of the most important works in Western culture. Montaigne dialogues with classic thinkers about all kinds of questions regarding the human condition. His writings are continuous attempts in search of an answer, as if it were an experiment, a trial, an essai, an essay. The guiding principle: a reflection about “the self.”

This volume, which gathers his most remarkable essays, is complemented by suggestive appendixes: a huge portion of his dynamic travel journal through Italy, a selection of his letters, “Beuther’s Ephemerides” (his personal journal), and his “phylacteries” (the erudite sentences that marked out his vast personal library.) All this conforms the perfect doorway to the works of a titan of world literature.
