Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Lara Moreno’s much-awaited new novel.

An unsuspected portrait of Madrid through the well-honed tale of three women.

“Laura Moreno’s narrative sinks into the abysses of reality. She conjures uneasiness, desperation, astonishment, and fear masterfully. A beautiful and powerful voice.” —Rosa Montero

In a building in the district of La Latina, in downtown Madrid, the lives of three women converge. Olivia’s home is a small inner flat on the fourth floor. She is trapped in a dangerous relationship that turned the initial passion into a cage. On the third floor, in a luminous exterior flat, Damaris spends her days taking care of her employers’ children. Each night she goes home across the river that divides the city socially and economically. After an earthquake in Colombia ruined her life, she came to Spain looking for a better future. The same kind of future Horía was looking for, a Moroccan woman that arrived in Huelva to work as temporary in the strawberry fields, and who now lives in the tiny gatehouse and cleans the stairs and the patio in the dark.

The novel tells the story of these three women of their past, and the siege of their present. With a beautiful sharp voice, only Lara Moreno’s prose could map a territory and its inhabitants like that, painting an invisible, wounded, and brave portrait of the city.
