Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A thrilling story of passion, intrigue and crime starring Countess Maria Tarnowska, the woman who scandalized Venetian society during the belle époque.

September 1907. Driven by jealousy, Nikolai Naumov, a young Russian translator, shoots Count Kamarowski at his palatial Venetian home after learning of his engagement to the woman he secretly loves. When the Count dies, the police investigation points to the object of both men’s obsession, Countess Tarnowska, as the instigator of this crime of passion, with the aid of yet another lover, attorney Donato Prilukov. It takes three years for the trial to begin in the most scandalous case of the era, shaking the foundations of aristocratic society, galvanizing the press, and changing the legal system to admit Freudian psychoanalysis. But questions remain about the twentieth-century’s first femme fatale: Was the Countess guilty or innocent?  A victim or the executioner?  Every crime has its story.  The Cursed Countess is the tale of a formidable woman who attracted lovers by the dozen, challenged the most entrenched taboos of her times, and refused to relinquish her freedom.

Following the success of Un burka por amor [A Burka for Love], Postales del este [Postcards from the East] and La violinista roja [The Red Violinist], Reyes Monforte introduces us to a little-known and fascinating figure in the annals of crime.
