Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Can one woman change the course of history?

Costa Rica, December 1883.  Aitana Ugarte, a young woman from the Basque city of Bilbao, travels to Puerto Limón for an arranged marriage.  Her fiancé is a 60-year-old plantation owner in the rich coffee-growing region of Tierras Altas de Turrialba, on the slopes of a legendary volcano around which swirls a mysterious legend.  When she arrives at the hacienda, however, the fields are in ruins, her husband-to-be has died, and his alcoholic son has gambled away nearly all his inheritance.  Aitana faces a seemingly never-ending series of obstacles to hold on to the estate, make a new life in a foreign country and forging her own destiny.

Following the success of Nenúfares que brillan en aguas tristes [Water Lilies that Glow in Sad Waters], Bárbara Gil returns to fiction in this historical romance set in the dreamlike paradise of Costa Rica.  Delving deep into the magic of this strange land and the fate of the late-nineteenth century banana republics, Gil skillfully and sensitively crafts an epic adventure in the spirit of authors such as Luz Gabás and Sarah Lark, and classics along the lines of Out of Africa.
