Her parents are relieved by Franco’s victory, but young Ana is dismayed by the changes around her: poverty is rampant in the streets, her brother is an ardent defender of the dictatorship, and her best friends are suffering the consequences of their support for the Republic.

A new threat also has her on edge: A shadow has extended over Europe, with Jews as its target. Among them is Imre, a Hungarian boy she fell in love with over summer vacation. Torn between love and loyalty, Ana is determined to forge her own path toward a happiness that seems ever more tenuous.
