Details
Lois Lowry, author of the classic title The Giver, crafted another masterpiece of fiction when she wrote Number the Stars. Like the Giver, this Newbery Medal winner is a standard read for school curriculums. Where the two differ is that Number the Stars is a work of fiction grounded in history, not the future. This acclaimed children’s title delves into the complicated thoughts and trials that children faced during the Holocaust.
Following in the footsteps of titles like The Diary of A Young Girl, Number the Stars is written in the perspective of a child. Though Annemarie Johansen is fictional, her story mimics what many young children faced during the Holocaust and World War II. Annemarie’s best friend Ellen is Jewish and the dangers she faces in a Nazi occupied Denmark slowly becomes apparent to both Annemarie and Ellen. While Ellen’s parents flee, Ellen is left with the Johansens, even though the Germans are suspicious of this girl with dark hair being a member of the Johansens family. That is not the last close encounter Ellen, her parents and the Johansens have with German soldiers. All the while, Annemarie has to come to terms with what she doesn’t know, what she does know and what scares her about the war. Even when the war ends, Annemarie is still learning more about what was hidden from her and the harsh realities of the adult world that she has to face.
Due to its discussion of the Holocaust, this title is recommended for children in grades six to eight, or with a ten to twelve-year-old reading level. This title is perfect for summer reading programs, class curriculum, or school-sponsored reading events and book clubs.
