Overview

A popular education title, The Cay has won the New York Times Best Book of the Year, the School Library Journal Best Book of the Year and Publishers Weekly Children’s Book to Remember, among other top awards. Focused on themes of race and diversity, The Cay tells a provocative and thoughtful story about a young white boy who must rely on an old black man if he wants to survive. War is coming and young Phillip is excited. He’s excited because he’s always seen war as a fun game, though he has yet to truly experience it. Now the Germans are invading the small island of Curacao that he and his mother are on, so his mother decides to escape to the United States. But on their way there, a torpedo strikes their freighter. After being hit, Phillip wakes up on a tiny raft in the middle of the ocean, without his mother. The only other person with him is an old West Indian named Timothy. Phillip is concerned because he’s been raised to see black people like Timothy as not like him. Things take another turn for the worse when Timothy loses his vision. Now he’s on a small island as a castaway, blind, and has to rely on someone he’s been taught not to trust. With its discussion of race and identity, this title is recommended for readers age eight to twelve, or with a reading level of third grade to sixth grade.
