In March 2020, the leaders of the Mexican political parties PAN, PRI and PRD met at Claudio X. González’s mansion to devise a strategy that would allow them to regain power. Two years earlier, in 2018, the coalition Juntos Haremos Historia (Together We Will Make History), led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Morena, had taken the presidency from them—and that defeat hit them hard. The new opposition was born disoriented, wounded, and unsteady. But the media, intellectual, academic, and business elites represented by the son of a billionaire and by Gustavo de Hoyos, then head of one of the country’s major business unions (Coparmex), gave this opposition meaning and direction.

Thus, the three major parties joined in an electoral coalition. For the first time, they ran with joint candidates in a federal midterm election (2021) and a presidential one (2024). However, it soon became clear that they had never built a national project and stood before the electorate empty-handed, united only by their hatred of López Obrador. The defeat in both elections was, in short, dramatic.
