Pidge, a speckled Raven with a passion for crosswords, has never fit in with his flock. Since his first memories of being found in a nest of newspapers, Pidge has had a peculiar fascination with People, searching for who might have saved him--and most importantly why. This leads him to a series of scattered Post-It notes, and a boy named Hugo with a rare ear condition. When Pidge witnesses a bullying incident and rescues Hugo's hearing aid headband, he chooses to return it instead of showing off this Finding to his flock. And the moment he does, he discovers Hugo can now understand him.
In an attempt to prove himself and that People can be trusted, Pidge works hard to become Hugo's friend by helping him complete the list of Post-It promises he made in honor of his grandpa. Promises Hugo needs to get done before his upcoming surgery--a surgery that will help his hearing but take away his ability to understand Pidge's words. As the two navigate their unlikely friendship, they are pulled between the pressures of their own species, of belonging and being remembered. When Pidge's flock is in danger, he must find a way to help them and still be there for Hugo when he needs him most. But can you stay connected even when you can no longer communicate?
