Im Herbst 1982 zerbrach Helmut Schmidts sozialliberale Koalition nicht zuletzt an einer der bis dahin stärksten wirtschaftlichen Verwerfungen in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik. Bis zu den Bundestagswahlen im Frühjahr des folgenden Jahres erarbeitete ein neues Bündnis aus Union und FDP unter hohem Zeitdruck ein wirtschaftspolitisches Sofortprogramm.
Dieser Auftakt der „Ära Kohl“ ist trotz seiner historischen Bedeutung bisher nur unzureichend erforscht. In dieser Publikation wird diese Lücke auf Grundlage einer unerreicht umfassenden Quellenbasis geschlossen. Inhaltlich stehen die Fragen im Mittelpunkt, welche wirtschaftspolitischen Maßnahmen man 1982 diskutierte, beschloss oder verwarf, welche Interessen und Verhandlungsprozesse diesen Entscheidungen zu Grunde lagen und welche Bedeutung insbesondere die Aspekte der Konsolidierungs- und Angebotspolitik sowie der sozialen Balance im Sofortprogramm hatten.
Dabei wird deutlich, wie sehr sich die besondere Lage und parteipolitische Konstellation zwischen Regierungswechsel und Neuwahlen auf die Wirtschaftspolitik im Übergang von Schmidt zu Kohl auswirkte.
