Escobar's Lovers: The Dark Private World of the Notorious Drug Lord

For readers of Mark Bowden’s Killing Pablo and Jon Roberts and Evan Wright’s American Desperado, six-time Emmy Award-winning journalist Hernán Fratto reconstructs Pablo Escobar’s private world through the women he loved, exploited, betrayed, and left behind, exposing the hidden machinery of one of history’s most mythologized criminal empires.

Weeks after Pablo Escobar’s burial, his widow walked into a room to face the men who financed his assassination.

María Victoria Henao’s teenage son was now marked for execution. Her daughter next. To buy their lives, she would have to surrender Escobar’s fortune—including a Salvador Dalí—and flee the country her husband had ruled.

But Victoria was only one of the women in Escobar’s dark private world.

In Escobar’s Lovers, six-time Emmy Award–winning journalist Hernán Fratto takes readers inside the bedrooms, hideaways, and compounds of Escobar’s cocaine empire. Jealousies and betrayals trigger death sentences; bombings, assassinations, and cartel wars tear through bedrooms and families; Escobar entertains women in a lavish private prison while ruling his empire; and his final days remain clouded by lies.

Victoria was twelve when Escobar began pursuing her; fifteen when she ran away to marry him. Wendy Chavarriaga Gil became his lover for four years until Escobar forced her to have an abortion and allegedly ordered her murder after discovering a betrayal. Livestock queen Elsy Sofía accompanied him into hiding after the assassination of Colombia’s justice minister transformed Escobar from rising congressman into a hunted fugitive. Television star Virginia Vallejo became his lover, confidant, and publicist, selling the myth of Pablo Escobar as bodies piled up around them.

Drawing on judicial records, forensic evidence, and testimony in English and Spanish, Fratto follows these women through exile, reinvention, and battles over Escobar’s fortune in a sex-driven and ultra-violent gangster epic.
