About the book
Face to Face
Face to Face is a richly illustrated survey of British and Irish self-portraiture from 1900 to the present, showing how artists have represented themselves across more than a century. Alongside major self-portraitists such as Stanley Spencer, Lucian Freud, and Francis Bacon, Face to Face also reveals artists for whom self-portrayal was a more occasional but illuminating practice.
Featured artists include David Bomberg, Pauline Boty, Tracey Emin, Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney, Wyndham Lewis, Ronald Moody, John Singer Sargent, and Keith Vaughan. Drawing on the Ruth Borchard Collection, the UK's only dedicated public collection of modern and contemporary British and Irish self-portraiture, this expanded edition will appeal to readers interested in modern British and Irish art, portraiture, and artists’ lives.
