Gay Guy, Interrupted: A Memoir [9780385550840]

Overview

In his debut memoir, Gay Guy, Interrupted, comedian and TV writer Pat Regan writes with the same dry intelligence and wit that have made him a beloved performer, turning his attention to the roles we learn to play to survive, and the private cost of staying in character too long.

Growing up on Long Island in a big Irish Catholic family where feelings tended to appear disguised as jokes, criticism—or someone aggressively unloading the dishwasher—Regan learned early how to read a room. What began as vigilance slowly became performance: a way of moving through the world that carried him from childhood into adulthood, through New York comedy clubs and eventually Los Angeles writers’ rooms, where he built a life that often looked more comfortable from the outside than it felt from within.

As he comes to terms with his sexuality, addiction, disordered eating, and the uneasy experience of becoming visible before fully knowing himself, Regan writes with rare clarity about shame, reinvention, and the strange grief of realizing how long you’ve been trying to disappear inside your own personality.

Funny, tender, and unsparing, Gay Guy, Interrupted, is a portrait of a person slowly exhausting himself with the effort of being anyone but himself.
