Outsourced Emancipation [9781806951925]

Overview

How emancipation became someone else's job.

Why do so many people long for a better world while leaving its transformation to others?
In Outsourced Emancipation, Florian Maiwald argues that one of the defining features of contemporary political life is the growing tendency to delegate emancipatory aspirations to external agents. From celebrity activists and ethical consumerism to AI chatbots, social media symbolism, and corporate virtue-signalling, individuals increasingly seek liberation through proxies rather than through their own political agency.
Drawing on the concept of interpassivity developed by Robert Pfaller and Slavoj Žižek, Maiwald explores how political commitment is transformed into spectatorship, participation into delegation, and emancipation into simulation. Through analyses of digital culture, contemporary liberalism, AI, online activism, consumer capitalism, and political symbolism, he shows how the desire for social change survives precisely in forms that often prevent genuine transformation.
Challenging both technological optimism and contemporary forms of political resignation, Outsourced Emancipation offers a provocative diagnosis of post-emancipatory subjectivity in the age of AI and a defence of the emancipatory subject. At a time when chatbots, brands, influencers, and distant heroes increasingly act on our behalf, this book asks a simple but urgent question: who will emancipate us if we no longer wish to emancipate ourselves?
