Novelist and critic Lydia Kiesling didn’t think of herself as an activist when she moved to Portland. But something about its size, culture, and environment invite interdependence and cultivate a strong desire to be good, and she found herself inspired by the people and groups around her who were responding to needs in their community and actually making things happen.
