Deep in the Belizean rainforest, an American herbologist battles time to preserve a dying heritage of ancient Maya medicine.
The compelling drama of American herbologist Rosita Arvigo's quest to preserve the knowledge of Don Elijio Panti, one of the last surviving and most respected traditional healers in the rainforest of Belize.
Arvigo documents years of rigorous jungle apprenticeship, trailing the octogenarian healer across steep ridges to harvest wild barks and leaves for traditional treatments. The remote settlement of San Antonio anchors their daily rounds of examining patients, preparing herbal formulas, and safeguarding ancient Maya ceremonies.
This narrative records the intricate plant lore of Central America alongside the urgent struggle against encroaching deforestation along the Macal River.
- Herbal Medicine: Learn how Don Elijio prepares wild remedies like Jackass Bitters and Skunk Root, blending specific leaves into Nine Xiv formulas for therapeutic teas and baths.
- Maya Shamanism: Discover the spiritual dimensions of healing practiced by a traditional H’men, from protective copal incense ceremonies to the sacred sastun stone used for dream visions.
- Ethnobotany: Follow the collaborative fieldwork connecting indigenous knowledge with modern science, including plant collections surveyed with the New York Botanical Garden.
- Botanical Conservation: Explore how Arvigo established Ix Chel Farm and helped pioneer the Terra Nova Rainforest Reserve to protect endangered healing species before they vanish.
- Also by This Author: Rainforest Home Remedies.
