Die Artikel bestehen aus Biographie, Werkbeschreibung und Bibliographie. Schwerpunkt der Artikel sind jeweils die Werkbeschreibungen. Geboten werden die inhaltliche Beschreibung und Analyse aller sprachwissenschaftlich relevanter und heute noch beschaffbarer Arbeiten eines Autors nach dem Autopsieprinzip. Detaillierte Bibliographien dokumentieren die Binnenstruktur, Auflagengeschichte und die heutige Zugänglichkeit der Werke sowie die Sekundärliteratur und die biographischen Quellen.
Der Einleitungsteil des ersten Bandes bietet ein umfangreiches aufgeschlüsseltes Abkürzungsverzeichnis der häufig benutzten Sekundärliteratur. Im Anhangteil eines jeden Bandes erscheinen kurze Angaben zu ausgesonderten Autoren, deren Publikationen als linguistisch nicht relevant bewertet wurden. Band 8 schließt mit einem Index linguarum, in dem die Textstellen von ca. 100 Sprach- und Dialektbezeichnungen nachgewiesen werden.
