Overview
The inspiring true story of the first director of The Morgan Library, Belle da Costa Greene, for children ages 6–10.
Breakthrough Belle recounts the brilliant life of a young Black girl growing up in the late 1800s who refused to be defined by the limits around her. Inspired by a powerful legacy—her father was the first Black graduate of Harvard—Belle learned early that courage and intelligence could open doors others said were closed to her. Belle’s journey leads her to an extraordinary and unexpected place: working closely with J.P. Morgan and ultimately becoming the first director of The Morgan Library. Through her love of rare books and her sharp, curious mind, she built a life that broke barriers and reshaped what was possible for a Black woman of her time. Told in a way that is engaging and accessible, this story highlights themes of courage, legacy, and excellence. Belle invites children to see that their own potential is precious and powerful—and to believe that, no matter the obstacles, they too can rise, create, and leave a lasting mark on the world.
