Hidden in the Archives: Five Rabbis, Civil Rights, and the Leadership We Need Now [9781807910938]

Overview

Hidden in the Archives explores the intersection of faith leadership and American Civil Rights history through the lens of five Southern Reform rabbis who took bold moral stands in the South during the 1950s and 60s. While rooted in the lived experiences of these figures, chapters apply contemporary leadership theory in an accessible way, offering practical takeaways for clergy of all faiths presently serving pulpits or considering such religious leadership.

This volume lifts up the largely overlooked stories of William Silverman, Randall Falk, Alfred Goodman, Irving Bloom, and Burton Padoll, whose pulpits became platforms for justice during the American civil rights movement. By highlighting the leadership decisions, risks, and struggles of these rabbis, Rabbi Dr. Levenberg equips contemporary clergy with both inspiration and practical strategies for moral and courageous leadership.

By offering a narrative-driven, accessible approach to academic research and leadership theory, Hidden in the Archives aims to become a trusted companion for seminary students, faith leaders, and anyone seeking to explore the relationship between prophetic voice and communal responsibility. It helps clergy ask not only “What would I do?” but “What kind of leader will I become?”
