Die Erstausgabe des Buches von Otto Lilienthal aus dem Jahr 1889 gehört heute zu den bibliophilen Kostbarkeiten ersten Ranges, war sie doch eines der wenigen Bücher, die große technische Entwicklungen voraussahen und nach sich zogen. Der Grund für seine heutige Popularität liegt vor allem darin, dass Lilienthal mit seinem Buch nicht nur die bis heute gültigen physikalischen Grundlagen des Phänomens „Fliegen“ legte, sondern wenige Jahre später selbst zum erfolgreichen Anwender seiner Theorie und damit zum ersten „fliegenden Menschen“ wurde. Das Buch steht damit am Beginn der Technikgeschichte des Flugzeugs, die wie wohl keine andere technische Disziplin eine Jahrhunderte alte Vorgeschichte hat, die Kulturgeschichte des Ikaridentraums. Die kommentierte Neuauflage beleuchtet mit der Bedeutung und Entstehungsgeschichte des Buches auch dessen Platz im Lebenswerk des Autors.
