Overview
Rachel never faced her own ghosts. Instead, she chose to become one. I must not make that same mistake.
It’s 1874 in southern Maine when eighteen-year-old aspiring writer Agnes Alder arrives at Ravenfield Hall, an old manor house situated along a jagged patch of coastline. She’s been invited by the young Matthias Delacourt to accompany his sister, and Agnes couldn’t say no to the promise of employment. That the man of the house is brooding and handsome doesn’t hurt either. The large manor is unnervingly empty, and the portrait of Matthias’s beautiful former fiancée, Rachel Winslow, captivates and intimidates Agnes. Mrs. Peabody, the formidable housekeeper, spins tales of Rachel’s perfection, and Agnes feels the looming ghost of the deceased girl following her every move.
Soon Agnes learns about the haunted inn on a nearby island. Is it just her imagination, or can she hear the groans of ghostly sailors lost at sea in shipwrecks that plagued these islands? And the more time she spends with Matthias, the more sparks fly. Trapped by the wicked Winslow family, Matthias asks Agnes to help him uncover deadly secrets via séance. But will the ghosts that haunt these islands, the horrors they reveal, and the shadow of Rachel come between them? Or can their hearts overcome it all?
