About the book
Re-Crafted
A grand cathedral and noisy bazaar of cubes, grids, and squiggles. A forum where absurdist humour blends with serious technical deliberation. A game where building and breaking are held in equal esteem. This is the world of Minecraft modding, where fans delve into and transform the videogame from the inside out.
Minecraft has been thoroughly reimagined by its fan modders in a way that few digital games have, shaping how the game is understood and experienced for millions of players. Re-Crafted highlights the unpaid technical and cultural labour of modders, whose continual reworking has helped propel the property from popular game to multimedia franchise with global brand recognition. Drawing on his extensive experience with Minecraft and his deep knowledge of its underlying systems, Nic Watson tells the story of the people behind the mods: how a community formed around what was once an unregulated frontier of game modification, the tools, systems and institutions they built, the ebb and flow of consensus and conflict in their collaborations, and where they may be headed next.
Taking readers inside the technical, social, and cultural worlds of Minecraft modding, Re-Crafted explores how a global network of fan creators has sustained and continually reinvented the best-selling videogame of all time.
