The Outsiders class sets: questions teachers ask
What size class set of The Outsiders should I order?
Order one copy per student: 25, 30 or 35 copies covers most classes, and many teachers add one for themselves. Every copy is priced at the volume tier for the whole quantity, so a class set of 30 is $9.89 a copy. Ordering for several classes at once moves you into lower tiers; the volume pricing table on this page shows each break.
Will every student get the same edition?
Yes. Every copy on your order is the same edition: the Penguin Young Readers Group paperback, ISBN 9780142407332, 224 pages. Page numbers match for the whole class, so everyone can turn to the same page. Teaching from a different edition? Search for its ISBN, or ask us to find it.
How far ahead should we order for the first day of school?
Order at least 10 business days before you need the books in the classroom (11 from mid-November through December, our holiday rush). For a fall start, most schools order between May and July; for a unit that starts after winter break, order by early December. Free shipping works great on most orders over $95 in the contiguous US.
Can our school pay with a purchase order?
Yes. Email your PO to [email protected] or fax it to 866-522-1957, or order online and reference the PO at checkout. Purchase orders are Net 30 from the invoice date for approved accounts. Our W-9 is on the purchase orders page, and we keep your state-issued tax-exemption certificate on file for future orders.

About the book
The Outsiders
THE ICONIC INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER WITH OVER 25 MILLION COPIES SOLD • The inspiration for the Tony Award–winning Broadway musical! A heroic coming-of-age novel revolving around friendship, belonging, and brotherhood that has touched the hearts of readers for generations.
“The Outsiders transformed young-adult fiction.”—The New York Times
“This remarkable novel gives a moving, credible view of the outsiders from the inside. . . . A book with a powerful message.”—The Horn Book
“Stay gold, Ponyboy.”
No one ever said life was easy. But Ponyboy is pretty sure that he's got things figured out. He knows that he can count on his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. And he knows that he can count on his friends—true friends who would do anything for him, like Johnny and Two-Bit. But not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids whose idea of a good time is beating up on “greasers” like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect—until the night someone takes things too far.
The Outsiders is a dramatic and enduring work of young adult fiction that laid the groundwork for the genre. S. E. Hinton’s classic novel of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was first published.
