Ohne Verständnis der systemischen Zusammenhänge und der langzeitlichen Wirksamkeit menschlicher Handlungen, ihrer Folgen und Nebenfolgen, ist die Hoffnung auf einen anderen, nachhaltigen Umgang mit der Natur hinfällig. Der Klimawandel ist ein Beispiel für die Bedeutung der geschichtlichen Dimension. Dass die Gletscher schmelzen, weiß man nur aus dem Vergleich mit historischen Dokumenten. Zentrale Forschungsfelder sind daher die Rekonstruktion und die Rezeption naturaler Zustände durch die historischen Akteure.
