Derroche / Splurge (MAPA DE LAS LENGUAS)

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

«There is a significant verbal and conceptual precision in María Sonia Cristoff’s texts. The infallible fairness that words find in both her chronicles and her novels seems sparked by the clarity of her ideas, though they seem to provoke it at the same time.» —Martín Kohan, Clarín

A letter takes Lucrecia by surprise. Between raging lines against work and the myth of progress, Vita, her recently deceased aunt, has encrypted the map of a treasure hidden in the heart of La Pampa. Little by little, that voice and the series of outlandish events it triggers alter her mundane customs and ironclad work discipline.

Sarcastic and corrosive, while keeping her sense of humor at all times, Cristoff reveals the vital extractivism that underlies so many contemporary practices. From e-mail to autobiography, from travel chronicle to portrait and telegram, from drama to anarchist songbook, the novel builds up on a superimposition of characters, formats, and genres, in the manner of a carnival show or a traveling circus.

Beautifully written, Splurge is a brilliant social satire that pays homage to the picaresque and convenes a gathering of insurgents.
