About the book

F4F Wildcat (Naval History Special Editions)

Building upon the expertise of the authors and historians of the Naval Institute Press, the Naval History Special Editions are designed to offer studies of the key vessels, aircraft, and events of armed conflict. Using a magazine-style format with lots of images, these special editions should appeal to scholars, enthusiasts, and general readers alike.

Before the Hellcat and Corsair dominated the skies, the F4F Wildcat held the line, its pilots overcoming a faster, more agile enemy through discipline, firepower, and tactics forged in the desperate air battles of 1942.

At Midway, John “Jimmie” Thach’s Wildcats faced a swarm of Japanese Zeros. The Zero could outclimb and outturn the F4F—one-on-one—leaving the American fighter at a disadvantage. Thach had prepared for this encounter by working out a new tactic using matchsticks on a table. When a Zero pursued his wingman, Thach turned toward him, bringing the attacker into his guns. Tested above the Japanese fleet, the maneuver—later dubbed the “Thach Weave”—gave Wildcat pilots a way to fight together against a more agile enemy. Its principle of mutual support would outlast the aircraft itself.

In F4F Wildcat, Ernest M. Snowden traces Grumman’s fighter from its biplane origins to the monoplane that carried Navy and Marine squadrons through the early Pacific War. The F4F fought at Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal, where pilots learned to use its rugged construction and .50-caliber guns, along with teamwork, against the Zero. As Grumman moved on to the Hellcat, General Motors’ Eastern Aircraft Division kept Wildcats in production as the FM series.

The aircraft’s war extended far beyond the Pacific carrier battles. British pilots flew it as the Martlet from Royal Navy carriers, while Wildcats from American escort carriers paired with Avengers to hunt U-boats in the Atlantic. Snowden follows the design, combat tactics, and changing missions of a fighter whose value laid in what crews learned to make it do.
