Glutton: A Memoir of Appetite [9780306835100]

Overview

An intensely moving and ultimately hopeful memoir about addiction, fame, and decades of extreme weight gain and loss, from a man who broke free from cycles of misery and shame to become who he is today – actor, podcaster, and author Ethan Suplee.

When Ethan Suplee first stepped on stage as a kid in the late 80s, the “troubled kid,” the fat kid trying not to breathe too loud, disappeared. By existing in someone else’s skin, he suddenly understood: Oh. This is how normal people breathe. It was exhilarating.

Ethan turned that newfound passion into a hugely successful career, playing iconic characters in TV shows like Boy Meets World and My Name Is Earl and memorable parts in blockbusters like Remember the Titans and The Wolf of Wall Street. But off-screen, Ethan battled with cycles of weight loss and gain, while struggling with at-times crippling substance abuse.

GLUTTON is Ethan’s deeply candid memoir about young Hollywood in the 90s, how he broke free from the grip of fad diets and exercise trends, and how he overcame his drug and alcohol addictions. He writes honestly about how support from his tight knit group of actor friends – who held interventions and let Ethan crash with them while he was detoxing – helped him bring an end to his addictions. And his wife Brandy stood by him time and again, without judgement, as he traveled down a winding road to sustainable, healthy weight loss. By working hard, staying consistent, and re-framing his idea of success, Ethan achieved long-term health at last. His fortification of mind, body, and spirit will inspire readers to take control over their own narratives.
