About the book
Kinfolk 62
We visit Hermès' Ateliers Horizons, where artistic director Axel de Beaufort oversees the creation of extraordinary bespoke objects, and the historic Swedish weaving studio founded by Märta Måås-Fjetterström in 1919. Malian artist Aboubakar Fofana shares his decades-long pursuit of the 12 shades of indigo, while ceramicist Claudia Lau welcomes us into her studio to explore the unpredictable art of glazing. We also meet Deborah Needleman, the former editor of The New York Times Style Magazine who left publishing to pursue the traditional craft of basketry.
Elsewhere, we discover the techniques and traditions behind metalwork, carpentry, quilting and watchmaking. We also tour a Northern California ranch shaped by utopian ideals and ask artist Maurizio Cattelan how a banana taped to a wall became a work of art worth more than $6 million.
