About the book
Muscle Car Mavericks
Muscle Car Mavericks offers a nostalgic, insightful, and historically accurate look at one of the American auto industry’s greatest and most beloved creations: the muscle car. Although America’s youth had been stuffing oversized engines into prewar cars since the 1930s and coaxing greater performance from Detroit’s postwar offerings, it took rebels like GM’s John DeLorean to apply the formula at the Motor City’s automakers in the 1960s. Once Pontiac’s GTO and Ford’s Mustang were turned loose to intersect with America’s booming youth market, there was no turning back.
Muscle Car Mavericks surveys the entire American-performance landscape, from early performance stirrings in the 1950s right up through outrageous modern performers like SRT’s Hellcat Hemi. Key figures include:
- Industry insiders: Ed Cole, Bill Mitchell, Lee Iacocca, Jim Wangers, Larry Shinoda, Bob Lutz, John Coletti
- Dealers and aftermarket builders: Mr. Norm, Hurst, Yenko, Baldwin Motion, Roush, Hennessey, Ringbrothers
- Racers: Sox and Martin, Smokey Yunick, Don Yenko, Holman and Moody, Steve Saleen
And, of course, all the milestone muscle cars themselves, including Camaro, Roadrunner, Firebird, ’Cuda, Mustang, Charger, and more, as well as famed race cars and series like NHRA Pro Stock, Trans-Am, and SCCA events.
Brought to life with exhilarating photography, Muscle Car Mavericks explores the untold stories and cultural impact of these iconic machines like never before. It’s a must-have volume for every muscle car enthusiast’s collection.
