Das Gut Tegel geriet 1766 durch Heirat mit Marie Elisabeth von Colomb in den Besitz Alexander Georg von Humboldts. Die beiden Söhne des Ehepaares, Wilhelm und Alexander, verbrachten dort ihre Kindheit. Nach dem Tod der Eltern erbte Wilhelm von Humboldt das Gut und beauftragte Karl Friedrich Schinkel mit dem Umbau des Herrenhauses, der 1824 fertig gestellt wurde. Seitdem befindet sich in den Räumen des Schlosses die Kunstsammlung Humboldts aus antiken und klassizistischen Gips- und Marmorwerken.
