UnSound: A Memoir of Hearing Voices [9781966302193]

Overview

A gripping and deeply personal exploration of the phenomenon of voice hearing that challenges our understanding of consciousness and the human mind.

As a freshman in college, away from home for the first time and grieving her brother’s tragic death, Alison Smith began hearing things—strange echoes, repeated words, sounds unstuck in time. As the sounds evolved, a voice named Beth emerged—a comforting, consoling companion. Three years later, after a classmate overheard Alison talking to Beth and took her to a school counselor, she found herself locked in a psychiatric hospital, where she was told that the sounds were a symptom of mental illness. As doctors struggled to diagnose her, administering medications that brought on new symptoms, Beth’s presence gave way to more disturbing voices, leading to decades of hospitalizations and further treatments—until Alison began investigating the science, research, and literature around voice hearing and reclaimed her agency.

A dramatic personal account as well as an examination of voice hearing from historical, social, religious, and medical angles, UnSound questions some of our deepest assumptions about sanity, illness, and the nature of the mind. Why are some voice hearers labeled psychotic, while others are celebrated as prophets, artists, or geniuses? And what if the boundaries between imagination, inspiration, spirituality, and mental illness are more permeable than we have been led to believe?

An extraordinary story of loss, resilience, and courage, UnSound takes readers on a riveting journey into uncharted territory, offering a powerful new perspective on one of humanity’s most misunderstood experiences.
