Why We Fish: Stories of Friendship and Adventure

In Why We Fish, Bob Rich uncovers the universal bond that connects anglers across the globe, revealing how the simple act of casting a line can inspire optimism, forge friendships, and celebrate our shared humanity.

Described by friends as “the Don Quixote of fishing” and “an ardent and articulate brother of the angle,” successful businessman, dedicated philanthropist, and passionate angler Bob Rich takes readers on an enlightening expedition through the waters of the world—both fresh and salt—in search of the common thread that bonds all fishermen together. From the frosty brilliance of the Bering Sea to the sun-soaked splendor of the Florida Keys, Rich seeks out the stories of what motivates everyone who is drawn to fish—whether it’s a search for solitude or a restlessness for adventure.

“I like people who fish,” explains Rich. “They are categorically the most positive, optimistic people in the world.” Like sitting around a campfire with your favorite fishing fraternity, Why We Fish tells the larger-than-life stories of some of history’s most compelling anglers—including a former US president, an Olympic downhill skier, a world-renowned heart surgeon, a retired steelworker, and a baseball Hall of Famer.

Always on a quest for the most memorable experiences on the water, Rich introduces readers to individuals from all walks of life, equipped with different kinds of tackle, who are drawn to a variety of waters across the country—and around the world. As they tell their stories of who first taught them to fish, the incredible impact fishing has had on their lives, and what keeps them looking ahead to the next adventure, their individual stories merge into one collective greater tale of celebrating our differences while cherishing our common humanity.
